Take a spiritual physics trip with sculptor Anish Kapoor

Instead of carving marble or forging bronze, Anish Kapoor sculpts with materials that can’t be held like mirrored reflections, the laws of optics and space around your body.  Don’t expect Kapoor’s sense-rattling sculptures to sit on pedestals in a museum.  Look instead at the sensual bump extruding from the gallery wall or gaze into gleaming orifices Kapoor cuts into it. Rather than carve representational figures from stone, he gives form to essential conundrums, such as distinguishing between self and object, not through sculpted works but by incorporating empty space into them.  In the first American museum survey of his work in 15 years, the India native transforms the West Gallery into a metaphysical fun house that subverts viewers’ preconceptions about traditional sculpture.  Created between 1980 and 2007, Kapoor’s sculptures are arranged mostly along the walls of an 8,000-square-foot gallery that comes to resemble an oversized playground designed by Lewis Carroll. Almost half the pieces could be loosely described as mirrors, apertures or the sort of sculpted rabbit hole that carried Alice to a Wonderland of illogic where comfortable expectations don’t apply.  Describing his work, Kapoor said he’s fascinated a simple construction of “paint and wax” and other materials “has another reality.” “I want to know the secret behind the magic,” he said.  Opening the show last week, Kapoor said his work reflects the modern physics discovery that “dark matter and non-matter” make up the fundamental stuff of the universe.  “I’m interested in the way art and the artist can sidestep the real and make it more real,” he said. “It’s real but not real.” Standing before his 32-foot-long distorting “S-Curve” mirror, Kapoor said a sculpture’s impact on viewers “extends beyond its space.” Representing nearly three decades of Kapoor’s career, this groundbreaking show reveals the increasing ambition, complexity and profundity of his art.  ICA Chief Curator Nicholas Baume said the exhibit “tests the limits of our perceptions and boundaries.  …  These works levitra rezeptfrei represent 30 years of extraordinary invention. The world unfolds as you move through it,” he said.  Born in 1954 in Bombay, Kapoor moved to England as a teenager and studied at Hornsey School of Art and Chelsea School of Art Design. In the early 1980s he gained fame sculpting shapes often coated with colored pigments from his native land. When he later cut holes and cavities into stone works, critics spoke of his growing interest in fundamental physical and spiritual dichotomies.  More recently Kapoor’s sculptures have grown significantly larger while including mirrors that reflect and distort viewers’ perceptions. Kinsley: Obama shouldn’t be linked with Ayers

The connection between Barack Obama and former Weather Underground members Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, slightly tenuous though it may be, has already become something of an issue in this campaign, and it will no doubt only get more attention as we get closer to the fall. In a recent column, Michael Kinsley made a preemptive attack against the issue, calling it “absurd.”

The connection between Obama and the Weather Underground members certainly isn’t as strong as, say, Obama’s connection to his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. But there is a bit of a link — specifically, as Edward McClelland noted in an article for Salon, “One of [Obama’s] first campaign events was at the home of Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn … Obama later served with Ayers on the board of the Woods Fund, which supports projects in poor Chicago communities.”

Kinsley’s argument isn’t that Ayers and Dohrn should be forgiven for their past, or that their connection to Obama is too shaky to be worth discussing, though he does correctly call it “tangential.” Instead, he writes:

Summit Fire 50% Contained

pinnacle fire 50 percent contained; nearly 3,900 acres burnedfirefighters said this morning that the summit fire, which has destroyed 20 homes and 18 other structures, is 50 percent contained and there was no significant enlargement overnight.

A total of 3,870 acres have burned since the blaze started Thursday morning off Summit Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said on its Web site.

Five injuries have been reported. Details were not immediately available.

“The fire made short runs during the night, but there was no significant fire expansion,” the Cal Fire statement said. “There is still active fire burning within the fire’s interior. With the low temperatures, high humidity, and relatively low wind, good progress made on containment is being made.”

Evacuation orders for parts of Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties remain in place today, the agency said.

Gusty winds Friday night and early Saturday pushed the fire northeast into Santa Clara County, prompting the early morning evacuation of about 50 homes near the historic Sveadal resort at the end of a narrow wooded canyon west of Morgan Hill.

Whatever happened to Dark Floors?

i got to wondering tonight what happened to dark floors. i do the weekly trailer park column over at cinematical.com and i did a write up on the dark floors preview back in december. the film got its world first night in its local finland on february 6, and has since been released in iceland and estonia (i’m embarrassed to about i don’t even know where that is) but i haven’t heard any news of a u.s. release. well, the internet is a pretty awesome thing and i quickly well-read (thanks to an article on top of at bloody-disgusting.com) that the film has been picked up by ghost house underground, a new direct-to-video branch of sam raimi’s ghost house pictures that will be releasing the film in october.secret floors stars the band lordi, a finnish rock group who wear some very cool and downright horrific monster costumes as part of their performance. when a man removes hist autistic daughter from her doctor’s grief and attempts to the leave the sanitarium, they and a nuisance of others take care disappointing the elevator onto a floor that shouldn’t exist. the place is strewn with corpses, and they find themselves stalked by repulsive demons, played by the members of lordi. this looks shocking enough for me to ignore the inadequate resemblance to silent hill. i checked old-fashioned the movie’s official site which is a pretty cool flash driven affair. take a look at the trailer lower than beneath, and beneath that you’ll find a lordi video that proves they’ve seen the evil through in finland.

It’s just a game!

over the past a handful of of weeks i have seen and heard some things that have been rather hideous. exceptionally when it is circumstance in u12 soccer.model saturday my team had a game that i was unable to convoy (i was given coffer stool tickets to watch real set by lake vs fc dallas). our other prepare took the reigns for the practise deceit and did a wonderful job. i made sure to have my dad send me text updates on the score among other things. my troupe went up 2 - 0 in the first half, which i was very excited regarding. then i got a very eccentric abstract message. we won 2 - 0 but the referee had called the game 12 minutes into the second half.at half-time of the artifice i was watching i called my dad to repossess at liberty the details. it turns gone from that the young girl that was an auxiliary referee on the game told the center referee that she would not finish the game because the opposing team’s fans were line her all sorts of names that i leave not recite on this blog. so the center referee called the game and awarded us with the win.the topic of language came up again pattern night as we played our final line of work of the regular season. we played a brutish fought game and ended up losing 2 - 1 (but we are still going into the tournament in 1st place). after the game was over there was obviously some tears, as is usually expected when passionate boys lose a tough game. but then i came to find out that some of those tears were not because of the loss. our boys who were playing on the side of the field verge on the opposing team’s fans were being yelled at and called names that, once again, i will not repeat on this blog.i absolutely cannot assume that there are adults out there who are not ashamed to act that way towards a child. my doubtful is, what should be done in a situation like this? obviously, if i had positive it was going on during the game i would have vocal with the referee, but i knew nothing about it until after the recreation was over. do you ask for be self-evident to the opposing coach at half-period, or the discrepant fans? i hate to start controversy or make the fans more upset, but this type of thing is something that i will not tolerate.i can’t infer how tipped over i would have been with my parents if a game i was playing in got called half way through because they wouldn’t shut their mouths. we’ve got to remember that it’s just a game and the kids are there to have fun. i’m sure it’s the in any case with other kids as with mine, but they enjoy themselves a lot more, uniform when they lose, if the parents are positive in their cheering.i recognize for reliable that if i till the end of time had a parent on my team that acted this way toward any opposing player or a referee they would no longer be welcome to sit on my sideline.so my plea is this, parents, please overlook yourselves and your egos and remember that it’s just a game and the most worthy quirk is for your kids to comprise about.
